“IT as Critical National Infrastructure”

By common sense, IT is critical to US national interests… but it’s more than that. “Executive Order – Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity” declared that critical infrastructure exists where as, …the incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of those matters.

Other nations have followed suit with similar measures.

IT is one of the 16 Critical Infrastructure Sectors, with the US Department of Homeland Security as responsible for this sector. However, IT permeates the rest of the sectors, so cybersecurity protection is crucial to all critical infrastructure. InfraGard (IG) is a public-private partnership to help protect critical infrastructure, where the public partner is lead by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
